On 02 and 03 February 2018, the 21st Italian National Selection of Haflinger Colts took place in Egna/Neumarkt. Out of 35 registered colts, 30 were presented to be evaluated by Valerio Raschetti and Guido Grazioli of the Haflinger experts' team headed by Giovanni Rigozzi. Five of the candidates were classified IIB (satisfactory) and are therefore not yet eligible to be used for breeding. Fourteen were awarded IIA (good) breeding value class ratings, one was rated IIA+ (good+) and a total of four were deemed IB (very good).
Willi-V BZ28431, bred by the Dejori family of Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen and owned by Hans Wechselberger from Vipiteno/Sterzing, was crowned colt of the year. Stakkato-V BZ28367, bred by Josef Mahlknecht from Fiè allo Sciliar/Völs am Schlern, is the runner-up, followed by Bravù-V BZ28498, bred and owned by Paul Mahlknecht from Steinegg/Collepietra.
This year, the Selection was held for the first time in early February. The dated allowed it be synchronised with the events organised by our neighbours across the border: On Friday 02 February, the Austrian Haflinger breeders selected their top colts in Stadl-Paura, and Sunday 04 February was the day the Haflinger Breeders' Association Tyrol had chosen for their selection Event.
