On Sunday 19 January 2020, it was once again time for the Meltina/Mölten Haflinger Breeders' Association's annual and traditional skijoring and sleigh races for Haflingers. This year, 20 Haflinger mares of all ages took part. For the first part, the contestants had to master the race track pulling a sleigh and staying in trot all the while. The Skijor races on the other hand are all about speed and therefore completed at a canter.
Sleigh racing With Konrad Zöggeler in the driving seat, Waltraud Schwarz's Adele was the fastest three-year old. Zöggeler also won the category "Mares not in foal", coming in first with five-year old Varinette, owned by Waltraud Schwarz ¬– and at 01:52:05, the pair achieved the day's top result. In the category "Mares in foal", Johanna Laner's mare Queen and driver Alois Eggarter came in first. Special mention should be made of Carmen Egger's 26-year old mare Unda: In spite of her advanced age, she came in fourth with Alexander Mittelberger in the sleigh – what a fantastic feat!
Skijoring The Skijor races had the crowd on the edge of their seats: A team consisting of a horse and rider with a skier in tow had two navigate two rounds of a white-knuckle ride course. Annabell won the three-year olds' race with owner Markus Alber in the saddle, while Paul Alber's mare Rihanna, also ridden by Markus Alber, was crowned the fastest among the Older Mares for the second time.
